“Working press freedom and protecting journalists is not a game and competition”

Mogadishu 07 August,2009 :: The Somali Journalists’ Rights Agency (SOJRA) would like to give a lesson for protecting journalists and keeping press freedom to Reporters without Borders and any organization aiming to harm the value of the press and their interests for ever.

In the world there is more than a thousand organizations and foundations working to protect press freedom and journalists rights. Any organization or foundation has rights to do that and noble objectives or editorial policy according to the following International Standards;

The right to freedom of association
States have an obligation to ensure that people are free to form and participate in associations to promote and protect human rights. This includes being able to seek and receive resources, to organize and to peacefully promote and protect human rights in association with others. International law recognizes the rights of individuals, through NGO’s, to pursue a broad range of objectives as long as their activities are legal and lawful. Also, the freedom of association includes the rights to associate informally.

International standards
Articles 1 and 5 of
UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders
Article 20 of
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Article 22 of
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
Article 8 of
International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

As well as any organization or individual has his right to freedom of expression and speech according to the flowing international standards;

The right to freedom of speech and expression
People have the right to seek, obtain, receive and hold information about human rights and human rights violations. States should ensure that people are able to peacefully protest, publicize and circulate information and criticize the failure of governments to protect or promote human rights.

International Standards
Articles 6 and 8 of
UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders
Article 19 of
Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Article 19 of
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

While this is existed there are some organizations in the world claiming that they are committing and conducting these international laws and treaties. It’s true they are well conducting groups but there is something hidden agenda or they keen on dismissing these international laws and treaties at some times and it depend on their interests or vision.

Why we say that is Reporters without Borders tried to dismiss our rights to access information and freedom of association according to this story http://www.news-mail.com.au/story/2009/02/09/international-group-sceptical-about-escape-attempt/

In light of the above SOJRA would like to let RSF staff to be well insider to the international laws and treaties or let the world without doing jealousy work or efforts their noble objectives towards protecting journalists and press freedom internationally.

SOJRA is complaining that it didn’t get due process and apologize from RSF and their staff and even the international media organizations or foundations were not answer clearly this aggressive attack against our rights to freedom of association. Although more international news agencies highlighted that row between us and RSF and SOJRA would like to say that news agencies thank you for your massive support and it was really help full and feeling brotherhood act.

Again SOJRA called for apologize from RSF leaders and staff for their horrible attack against our rights to freedom of association.

Therefore, the Somali Journalists’ Rights Agency (SOJRA) is kindly requesting all the international media and human rights agencies or foundations to make sure their position and be skilled at their work without given interest any particular group or person. Everyone knows that true and justice will be the last once at future time.
