On my way to the Island this morning, at Ojodu Berger, I met a scene. A bike man was struggling with two teenagers, both male. They asked him for his ticket. One sized the bike man's helmet, the other began ruffling the bike man. The bike man held on tight to his bike and demanded for their ID card. They would not produce one and they wouldn't let the bike man go. Then a bus driver who was also watching (it was at a bus stop) shouted at the boys, telling them to stop harassing the biker rider.
To hide their fear, I think, one of them banged on the door of the man's bus. The bus conductor stepped out and was going to grab one of them. Seeing that they were getting more than they bargained for, both boys took to their heels, about the time the men from the bike riders association came.
Until we stand up against violence in Nigeria, we will continue to be under oppression. The bus driver did not speak because he was a friend to the bike man. The conductor did not come down because his bus was hit. The bike man did not stand his ground because he did not want to pay his dues - all he asked for was their ID. They all took action because they knew the boys were there just to oppress them.
If you think the problem with our country is leaders, then think again. Even if all the rulers, politicians in power, were killed, it won't help the situation. Why? It is a cycle, we all take the pose of a prey or predator, depending on the situation. We have a culture of violence and oppression.
So, don't wait till you get the power to kill the leaders you hate. Don't wait till you are in a position of power. Don't wait for another GANI FAWEHINMI, there could only be one and he is gone now.
Change this nation by refusing to be a predator and by stopping the little acts of violence around you.
STAND UP, TAKE ACTION NOW.
